August Nail Art

19th August 2017

Because we work out so much (and because we’re both klutzy), we love to get gel nails since they don’t chip so easily and last 3-4 weeks!

We both go to Marie Nails every month and love to get something fun done on our nails. There are multiple locations of Marie Nails, but we go to the one in Koreatown. We usually make our appointments about a month in advance.

We get inspiration for our nail art from Pinterest and different nail artists on Instagram. Some of our favorites are Nina Nailed It, Get Buffed Nails, and Rice Kitty Nails.

For August, we chose something bright, fun, and summer-y for our pool party.

Joanna’s nails. Pineapple and watermelon nails!

Grace’s nails. Perfect pool party nails.

Do you like getting nail art done? Let us know!

Propel Co:Labs Fitness Festival

9th August 2017

*This post is sponsored by Propel, but all opinions are our own.

Propel Co:Labs event at Playlist Yoga

Last week, we were able to attend the Propel Co:Labs event at our favorite yoga studio, Playlist Yoga (actually, more like the only studio we go to when we very occasionally do yoga). Playlist is already usually so fun because of the music, but for this event, there was a DJ, which made it even better.

Goofing off post Playlist Yoga

All last week, there was a series of workout events, hosted by Propel Co:Labs at different studios in LA. And all leading up to the big Propel Co:Labs Fitness Festival, which is this weekend August 12-13! Think music festival but with fun workouts and great music like AlunaGeorge.

Cheers! Rehydrating with Propel after an intense Speedplay workout.

We’re so excited to be attending because all of our favorite LA studios will be there (Playlist Yoga, Speedplay LA, Prevail Boxing). Plus there will be celebrity trainers like Gunnar Peterson (who doesn’t want to train like the Kardashians?!) and celebrities like Grace’s biggest girl crush, Shay Mitchell. But we’re most excited to be getting a taste of different studios in country like New York’s Tone House! We both have been wanting to go to a Tone House class in New York, but have been scared and unable to find the time for it.

While we’re so sad we can’t make it on Saturday, we’ll be there on Sunday (potentially hungover oops)!

We’re signed up for:
– 11 am Scott Foley x Gunnar Peterson
– 12 pm Speedplay
– 2 pm Prevail Boxing
– 3 pm Speedplay x Tone House

Let us know if you’re attending, and if you’re going to be at any of the events we chose!

Tickets are on sale here, $50 for one day, $75 for the whole festival. But we have 7 FREE passes to the festival! We’re doing a giveaway on our Instagram today, so check it out for the details!

We’ll also be going on Instagram Live for the event. We’ll be posting the times on our Instagram Stories, so stay tuned!

Park Beach Club with Truly Sparkling

28th July 2017

It’s almost August. You know what that means… Park Beach Club! Every year we throw a huge pool party and invite all our friends. As soon as the weather gets warm, we start planning the party. It’s a day filled with floaties, tacos, and delicious drinks. We have some exciting things planned for this year’s party, so be on the lookout for our video recapping the event toward the end of August!

Here are some of our absolute essentials for Park Beach Club:

Park Beach Club essentials.

  1. Unicorn floatie
  2. Pineapple reusable plastic cup
  3. Burger beach towel
  4. Pineapple and flamingo straws
  5. Flamingo floatie drink holder
  6. Truly Spiked & Sparkling
  7. Panda speaker
  8. Watermelon cooler bag

This year we’re excited to add Truly Spiked & Sparkling, a spiked sparkling water which is just 100 calories and 1 gram of sugar! We plan on consuming a lot of tacos, so we love that Truly Spiked & Sparkling is a great light and refreshing alternative to beer and cocktails.

Skincare Essentials

13th July 2017

While we love to be healthy by exercising and eating balanced meals, we’re both huge on skincare also. It’s all about being healthy inside and out!

Summers can be so hard on our skin especially when at the gym sweating or when traveling and being exposed to all the different elements and climate changes. So we love to find products that work for our skin. We definitely don’t neglect this self-care.

During the summer, Joanna’s biggest skincare issue is her eczema, so staying moisturized is super important. Grace’s biggest skincare issue is preventing breakouts but not stripping moisture with face washes and toners.

If you follow our Instagram (which you should be if you are – @exercisewithextrafries), you’ll know we love absolutely love Korean skincare products! We both swear by the Korean 10-step routine. Here are some of our favorite products at the moment.

Joanna’s must-have skincare essentials

  1. Dr. Jart Vital Hydra Solution – Joanna’s current favorite face mask. She’s currently obsessed with all Dr. Jart products.
  2. Innisfree Second Skin Mask – We both love Innisfree masks and wish they were available in the US. We always stock up on these when we travel to Korea.
  3. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence – Joanna usually uses affordable skincare products, but this is her one splurge.
  4. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – Joanna’s favorite body lotion. She keeps several as a backup so she never runs out. Their whole line of products is great for people with eczema.
  5. Dr. Jart Liftra – Night cream that’s on the heavier side, but still feels light.

Grace’s must-have skincare essentials

  1. Innisfree Volcanic Pore Toner – Grace is so obsessed with this toner. It doesn’t strip your skin of oils, but it controls sebum.
  2. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion – One of the best acne products! Dab it on at night, and your pimple is significantly smaller the next day. Tip: Do NOT shake.
  3. Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask – Another must to control excess oil. Grace uses this about 1-2x per week.
  4. Neogen Bio-Peel+ Gauze Peeling – We absolutely love this for exfoliating. It’s not too harsh on your skin.
  5. Dr. Jart Rubber Mask – We’re both obsessed with everything Dr. Jart at the moment. This mask looks a little creepy, but it feels so great.
  6. Dr. Jart Porecting Solution – We both love to use sheet masks. Tip: Store them in the fridge! It feels so good in the summer.

While these are our favorite products, it’s too hard to carry all of them with us when we’re going to the gym or traveling. So we like to carry just the essentials and usually small, travel-size or sample-sized products.

Some of Grace’s gym bag essentials.

Sunscreen and moisturizers are always a must! This Dr. Jart sunscreen is super light and protects against UVA and UVB rays.

Joanna’s gym-bag essentials. Body wipes are a must if you can’t grab a shower immediately after a class.

We’ve both been using Biossance 100% Squalane Oil and Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil as part of our post-gym routine. These mini duos are so easy to throw into our makeup bag for the gym or for travel. We love that they moisturize our skin so well without being too oily. Plus the 100% Squalane Oil is a multipurpose oil that you can use to moisturize all over your body after your shower!

Planes are so dry, so we always carry extra moisturizing products in our carry-on.

You can grab FREE samples of the duo: here. All you have to pay for is the shipping!

So easy to apply the Biossance 100% Squalane all over to moisturize!

Let us know what your biggest skincare concern is, or what skincare product you swear by!

Recipe: Paleo Korean Turkey Bowl

20th June 2017

Our friend Food Wonted sent us an amazing Paleo Korean Beef Bowl recipe from Fake Ginger last week. We modified it to make it Clean Program-complaint and paleo by substituting the beef for ground turkey and adding some extra veggies.

Paleo Korean Turkey Bowl
Recipe modified from Fake Ginger
Clean Program-compliant

Ingredients
1/3 cup coconut aminos
2 1/2 tablespoons coconut nectar
2 tablespoons sesame oil
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
1 bunch scallions, chopped, white and green parts separated
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 1/2 pounds organic ground turkey
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
3 cups cauliflower rice
1 pound broccoli florets, steamed
Any other vegetables of your choice

Instructions
1. In a small bowl,  stir together the coconut aminos, honey, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, white scallion parts, pepper, and chili paste.
2. In a large skillet set over medium-high heat, heat the cooking oil. Brown the meat for 5 to 8 minute, break it up with a spatula as it cooks. Continue cooking until the meat is no longer pink. Add the sauce to the skillet, bringing it to a quick boil, and then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 4 minutes.
3. Serve warm, sprinkle with the green scallion tops and sesame seeds over the cauliflower rice with steamed broccoli on the side.
4. Add any other vegetables! We added snow peas and baby zucchini.

Park Sisters Scream for Ice Cream at Museum of Ice Cream

9th June 2017

To be perfectly honest, we came here just for the photos. After seeing this on everyone’s Instagram and Snapchat, we knew this would be the new “basic b*tch” spot to go to.  Also Joanna just really wanted to be a 5-year-old and jump into the germ-filled sprinkle pool (Grace’s words). But we really did have a great time running around and touching everything, when we weren’t supposed to, in the museum.

Unfortunately because of all the people who came in before, 2 of the installations are now roped off so people won’t touch or climb on them! (Way to ruin it for us, guys…) But that didn’t stop Joanna from grabbing the popsicles. (We are in no way condoning touching and ruining art. Joanna is just a rule breaker. Please don’t follow suit. Bad Joanna!!! -Grace)

Surprisingly the sprinkle pool room was pretty fun. Joanna was the first to jump in even before all the kids got in. Whereas, Grace stood awkwardly off to the side until Joanna forced her in at the end for some photos.

If you do go, the sprinkle pool room is timed. You get a few minutes in there with your group. So plan your photos out since those minutes go by really fast!

Our favorite ice cream was the Salt & Straw salted caramel. Our least favorite was the charcoal cookie dough…although that was probably because we thought it was ice cream, not cookie dough and didn’t understand why it wasn’t cold. Our bad haha.

If you have the opportunity to go while the Museum of Ice Cream is still in LA, come prepared to snack and take LOTS of photos. We were so impressed by the girls who came in the cutest outfits with each room pre-planned so their Instagram boyfriend could get the perfect shot.

Let us know if you’ve been and what your favorite room was!

A Day with CALIA

5th June 2017

On Friday, May 19, we had the opportunity to spend the day in Malibu, working out with Carrie Underwood and her personal trainer Eve Overland and learning about the new SS17 CALIA by Carrie Underwood. We actually partnered with CALIA for 2017, so be on the lookout on our Instagram for more photos!

We first had a vegan cooking demo by Celebrity Chef Tal Ronnen of Crossroads. We all participated in helping make the salad for lunch. Well, Grace made the dressing, while Joanna “supervised” by watching and Snapchatting.

Afterwards we did an hour-long workout on the lawn, led by Eve Overland, Carrie Underwood’s personal trainer. Although we both workout regularly, the workout was so difficult! Definitely had us sweating. Our CALIA workout clothes held up during the workout.

Next we got our hair braided at the Braid Bar Nine Zero One Salon. And finally got to eat an amazing vegan meal. Definitely one of the best vegan meals we’ve ever had.

Afterwards we had the opportunity to preview the new SS17 CALIA line and hear about where Carrie and the team found their inspiration. We had no idea what went into the creation and design. It was great to hear about how they really thought about how the clothes would move and work for active women, such as making sure there was a pocket for your phone or adding a spandex layer under your shorts so you don’t have to think twice about your shorts riding up during a hard workout.

Finally when the day ended, we were so grateful for the car service so we didn’t have to drive home in Friday traffic. We both ended up knocking out the whole ride home!

Thank you so much to Carrie Underwood and CALIA! We had such a blast.

Recipe: SaladPower Popsicles

29th May 2017

How is it almost June already?! Although we’re sad that 2017 halfway over, we’re excited for the warm weather, pool parties, and BBQs. We don’t have anything exciting planned for Memorial Day weekend, but we plan on lounging by the pool and cooling off with these homemade SaladPower popsicles and several glasses of rosé.

SaladPower is juice that’s low in sugar and full of vitamins. It’s loaded with superfood vegetables  and 100% juice, natural, and non-gmo. We’re both crazy about green juice so we were excited to discover a healthier juice.

If you saw our Instagram, you know the first batch didn’t turn out well. Turns out you have to freeze popsicles for a very long time. Be patient!

SaladPower Popsicle
Ingredients:
4 cups fruit of your choice (we used strawberries, cherries, and cantaloupes)
1/2 cup SaladPower juice of your choice (we used Just Veggies)
1/4 cup almond milk

Instructions:
1. Blend fruits, SaladPower juice, and almond milk until smooth.
2. Pour into popsicle molds.
3. Freeze overnight.
4. Enjoy!

SoulCycle Turn It Up Challenge

18th May 2017

I DID IT! I finished the SoulCycle Turn It Up challenge with 20 classes in 30 days!!

I’ve always wanted to participate in this challenge that SoulCycle has 1-2 times per year. However, this round SoulCycle did the challenge a little differently. Usually it was a #TurnItUp20 challenge (20 classes in 30 days), but this round you had a choice of 10, 20, or 30 classes during the 30 day period.

I opted for the 20 classes. While I love SoulCycle and spin regularly, I was spinning 2-3 times per week normally. This meant I would have to spin about 5 times per week, which is way more than I had ever done! It was so incredibly hard the first 2 weeks, but I feel so accomplished for completing the challenge especially with final exams going on at the same time. While I probably didn’t lose a single pound (my eating habits were so erratic with the stress of final exams), I definitely feel so much stronger and can say I have improved so much during this challenge.

Couple of highlights:

  • I took 16 classes with my favorite instructor, David. If you’re in LA and haven’t taken his classes yet, you need to right now! (But please grab your bike after I’ve gotten mine haha.)
  • I did my first back-to-back classes. One was even a Survivor (60 min) class! Definitely couldn’t have done it without David’s encouragement.
  • I missed a class for the first time…because I was hungover! GASP. I know, right? I rarely drink, and I was definitely reminded why I don’t drink that morning haha.
  • I finally got to spin with Pixie, the instructor who made me fall in love with SoulCycle, again! It’s been so hard with my schedule to get into one of her classes, but I was able to take 2 with her!
  • I tried 2 new instructors. If you know me, I have trust issues with trying new instructors, so this was definitely out of my comfort zone.
  • I went from semi-hiding in the 2nd row middle and occasionally riding front row when I was brave enough to now be committed to riding front row all the time.
  • And finally, I took a 5 am class…with Good Morning America…and a surprise performance by Jason Derulo!!! I was so shocked when he came into the room singing and had such a blast spinning, dancing, singing, and whipping my towel all at the same time.

I honestly could not have done this without the support from my instructor David. He was constantly cheering me on and sending me words of encouragement on Instagram. Definitely going for the 30 classes next Turn It Up challenge!

Coachella Packing + Tips

10th April 2017

I absolutely LOVE going to music festivals. This is my 4th year in a row attending Coachella, and I usually go to a couple more every year. This year I’m planning on going to FYF Fest also. Maybe also Hard Summer and CRSSD!

As you may have seen in our first “about us” post, I have an Excel spreadsheet and a checklist for items to take with me to Coachella and other festivals.

Here’s what I normally pack:
Packet of tissue, also to use as toilet paper if needed in porta-potties.
Wet wipes.
Hand sanitizer.
Sunscreen. I personally love this one because it protects from UVA and UVB rays and it’s super lightweight: Biore Sarasara Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+/PA++++ 50g Sunscreen
SEALED lip balm, 1 per day. Sometimes they’re not strict on the “sealed” policy, but can never be too careful or prepared!
SEALED packets of gum, 1 per day.
Full charged external phone charger with cord. So necessary if you like to Instagram, Snapchat, text, and take photos as much as I do! This is the one we use: Anker PowerCore 10000, One of the Smallest and Lightest 10000mAh External Batteries, Ultra-Compact, High-speed Charging Technology Power Bank for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and More
Body wipes like SweetSpot Labs, especially if camping! SweetSpot Labs Vanilla Blossom on the Go Wipettes, 30 Count
Bandana to wrap around your face. Dust is constantly kicked up inside the tents. The first year I got pneumonia and had a 1-month long cough because of all the dust. I wear my bandana as much as I can, even just walking around the grounds. Last year I put a medical mask underneath my bandana, and it was even better! Also bandanas help with the smell inside porta-potties and help you from losing your voice since you won’t scream as much, well at least for me it does.
Sunglasses!
A flannel or sweater. It can get pretty cold at night especially the long walk back to your car. Also if you have eczema or sensitive skin, it also works as a blanket to sit on instead of the grass or dirt.
Earplugs. So important! If you have ringing in your ears at end of night, you didn’t wear them enough! These earplugs are great because they protect your ears but don’t muffle the sound completely like foam earplugs do. If you have normal sized ears, these are great: Etymotic Research ETY Plugs High Fidelity Earplugs; Standard Fit, Blue Tip, Polybag If you have smaller ears like us: DownBeats Reusable High Fidelity Hearing Protection: Ear Plugs for Concerts, Music, and Musicians (Clear Ear Plugs, Black Case) or Alpine Hearing Protection MusicSafe Classic Earplugs for Musicians

I pack this all in a fanny pack to keep my hands free! I love the Herschel’s ones because they’re cute and pretty large. Herschel Supply Co. Seventeen, Black, One Size

Also for me: I pack this knee strap because I have patellar tendonitis, so walking around all day usually makes my knee hurt. This helps a ton. Mueller Jumpers Knee Strap BLACK

I also prefer to wear Nikes or other comfortable sneakers instead of boots or sandals even if they’re not as cute because my knee can’t handle running around for over 12 hours. Also if you go into a crowded tent like Sahara, it’s super easy to get stepped on by accident, so I would rather not deal with bleeding toes.

Additional tips:
1. Take an Emergen-C before starting drinking and before Coachella.
2. Eat!! It’s so important to eat! You’re spending so many hours outside in the heat, walking, and dancing so much. You burn a ridiculous amount of calories. It’s so easy to forget to eat when you’re having fun and trying to catch different acts (or if you’re taking a *ahem* “supplement” that has a side effect of suppressing your appetite).
3. Post-Coachella: Another Emergen-c and EAT even if it’s not healthy or you may not be hungry! A Hot Pocket / Lean Pocket or Cup Noodles is super easy to heat up.
4. Additionally, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO HYDRATE! It’s so so so hot in the desert, plus you’re sweating so much. And if you’re drinking, it dehydrates you even more! CamelBaks are great to have for festivals for this reason! Plus there is always a free water refill station.
5. And finally, HAVE FUN! Coachella is so fun. Even when the lineup isn’t your favorite, it’s such a great time in the desert with your friends! I absolutely look forward to it every year.

Let us know what you pack with you! And let us know if you’re attending this year! I’ll be there weekend 1, and Joanna will be there both weekends!
