How to Sheet Mask

Sheet masking is one of our favorite steps in our skincare routine. When we were first getting into skincare, Jo picked up a ton of sheet masks from Korea, and we used one daily. Our skin looked and felt SO amazing and hydrated.

While we don’t use a sheet mask daily anymore, we still try do one 2-3x per week. Now, we like to use “nicer” sheet masks instead of the 1₩ (~$1) ones. We’ve gotten several questions on our Instagram about how to use a sheet mask so we’re showing you how to use a sheet mask in 6 easy steps.

Steps to Sheet Mask

Step 1: Clean and prep your skin

Go through your normal cleansing routine. We ALWAYS double cleanse, meaning we use an oil cleanser followed by a gel cleanser. The oil cleanser will break down makeup, SPF, and excess oil. The gel (or water-based) cleanser will clean off sweat, dirt, and any water-based debris on your skin.

We then use micellar water to remove any remaining makeup, especially on our eyes. Finally, we prep our face with toner, essence, and any spot treatments.

Step 2: Apply the sheet mask

Open sheet mask, and carefully unfold it. Some sheet masks are very thin, and some also have 2-3 layers, where you have to peel off the protective layer to get to the actual sheet mask.

Place sheet mask on your face, matching the eye, nose, and mouth holes. Then smooth out the sheet mask over the rest of your face.

Step 3: Apply the remaining serum

After placing the sheet mask on your face, take the remaining serum from the package to pat onto face, neck, and chest. Don’t waste the serum in the package!

Step 4: Leave on for 15-20 Minutes

This is the average for most sheet masks, but check the time on the package. Don’t go over the time!

More does not mean better.

Your skin will dry out if you leave it on for longer than the directions. So that means, don’t go to sleep overnight with your sheet mask on!

Step 5: Pat the remaining product onto your face

After the time is up, remove sheet mask, and throw it away. Lightly tap the product on your face into face. Do not wash off!

Step 6: Finish with the rest of your skincare routine

After letting the serum soak into your skin for a couple minutes, finish with the rest of your skincare routine. We follow up with our eye cream and moisturizer.

Tips & Tricks to Using a Sheet Mask

Tip 1: Keep your sheet masks in the fridge

We love keeping them in the fridge, so it’s nice and cool when we put it on. It feels amazing especially on a hot summer day or after a long day.

Tip 2: Use an ice roller

On days when we’re a bit hungover or puffy, we love using our ice roller with our face mask for an added bonus. Check out our post on different facial tools.

Tip 3: Multi-task with an eye mask

Recently, we’ve seen people multi-task their sheet masks by putting on eye mask patches on first, then their sheet mask over them! It’s amazing and such a great use of time.

Tip 4: Sheet masks expire

Just like all other skincare products, sheet masks do expire! Check the expiration date (different than a manufactured date, which a lot of Korean products will have as well). If it’s a couple months past the expiration date, we’ll still use it (disclaimer: we aren’t experts, so this is just what we do), but anything too long, we’ll toss.

Favorite Sheet Masks

Here are some of favorite sheet masks:

Dr. Jart – We love all the Dr. Jart sheet masks, especially the Vital Hydra solution and Soothing Hydra solution.

Dr. Jart Rubber Masks – These may technically not be considered a sheet mask, and they’re a little scary-looking. But they’re AMAZING. We love using them.

Estee Lauder – These are definitely a splurge. We shared a pack of these with our mom. My goddddd, these are amazing. We would save them and use them for “special” occasions or when our skin desperately needed it.

SKII – Also definitely a splurge. Also just as amazing as the Estee Lauder.

Laneige – We actually haven’t tried these and just discovered them as we were writing this blog post! We need to get some ASAP to try. Honestly, if they’re anything like their other products, we know we’re going to love them.

Mediheal – Hands down, these are our current favorite masks. There’s a reason they’re so popular! Once when we were traveling, Grace broke out horribly and had 2 giant pimples on the side of her face. Our friend gave her the Tea Tree one to use, and they were gone the next day. Since then, we swear by Mediheal masks.

Now that you have steps & all our tips and tricks on sheet masking, go get glowy!
